Can I take photos at Dachau?

Yes you can. Visitors are welcome to take photographs at Dachau. This includes during our Dachau tour.

While photos are allowed at Dachau, visitors are reminded of the sensitivity of such a place. As such, extra care and respect should be shown - which includes the taking of photos.

Is there a place to eat?

There is a canteen at the entrance but we encourage guests to instead get a snack/coffee before we board the train at the central train station in Munich. The reason we usually avoid the canteen is that large school groups use it and the line can take forever.

Eating on the grounds of the former concentration camp is not allowed. An exception is made of course if you have a condition or feel weak/under the weather. Just please be subtle.

Remember: we get back to Munich at about 2.35pm (in time for lunch)

What should I wear at Dachau?

There are two concerns here

  1. what should I wear for the weather at Dachau?
  2. what is respectful to wear?

1. What should I wear for the weather at Dachau?

We will be outdoors about 50% of the time during the tour so please check the weather before we begin.

Cold Weather:

It can be quite cold in the winter months. Layers are your friend - you can always take off a layer if you feel too warm! Wooly hat, scarf and gloves will make a huge difference.

Warm Weather:

It can get pretty hot during the summer at Dachau. The former concentration camp is quite exposed to the sun. The trick to avoid overheating is to cover up your skin. Long sleeves, long pants. A hat of some kind can word wonders. You are even welcome to use a UV protective umbrella on the tour. Use plenty of sunscreen and don't listen to people who say that UV rays are "not as strong in Europe".

Footwear:

We will cover a distance of about 2.5kms/1.5miles. The surface we walk on is mostly flat but covered with loose gravel. Boots in the winter will keep your feet warm and dry.

Rain:

A small umbrella or waterproof poncho will protect you from the rain. Even if it looks like the chances of rain are low - there's no harm throwing a small umbrella into your daypack.

2. What is respectful to wear at Dachau?

Whatever you normally wear in your everyday life should be fine. It is up to individual visitors to choose what they feel is appropriate.

Absolutely no imagery or emblems (flags, badges etc.) of a far-right nature can be displayed at Dachau.

How long does it take to get from Munich to Dachau?
